Our Focus: Post-Production Application
Let’s start with the core of what we do: our testing isn’t about manufacturing new vinyl from scratch — it’s about what happens after the toy is made. We focus on how plasticizers behave when applied externally, post-production, to restore softness to existing inflatables. That’s a very different scenario than adding plasticizer to raw vinyl during manufacture.
Most industrial testing revolves around that production-side use — measuring how a plasticizer blends into a molten PVC matrix before it’s cast or extruded. That data is incredibly valuable, and we do rely on it to understand long-term chemical stability, UV resistance, volatility, temperature flexibility, migration tendency, and more. But our real-world testing is about what collectors actually do: applying treatments to the toys they already own.
What We Test Directly
When we test a plasticizer in the studio, here’s what we’re paying attention to:
Application Behavior
How does it spread? Absorb? Is it easy to apply consistently?
Surface Interaction
Does it soften the paint? Affect the ink? Cause any smearing, bleeding, or gloss changes?
Absorption Time:
How long does it take to soak in and stop feeling tacky? How does temperature impact absorption
Softness and Feel
How much does it restore flexibility? Is the feel rubbery, soft, greasy, or just right?
Reactions Over Time
Does the plasticizer stay in place or leach back out? Does it remain sticky? Any delamination, discoloration, or dust pickup?
We do this testing across multiple types of vinyl and different paint systems, solvent-based inks, UV-cured prints, screen prints, and more. We test on real toys. Actual pool toys from our collection.

We’re a small, community-focused studio — and even spending a year and a half field testing different plasticizers, like we did before launching Vinyl Vibe Studio, is more than most would ever attempt.
